About

Walking the trail

Begin the trail from any location and look out for the green foot on the posts to guide your way through the vineyards. If using the App keep an eye on the map to learn about the points of interest on your way.

The trail is an easy flat walk and is pram friendly. It isn’t sealed so please bear this in mind that sensible shoes are recommended and depending on the weather there could be mud and puddles.

It includes 6 wineries and is just under 5 kilometres in length. If you allow 20 minutes at each winery, the trail should take approximately 3 hours to complete.

PARKING

Parking & amenities are available at all five wineries on the trail. You may also prefer to begin your walk from the heart of Coonawarra and start at the park, where parking is also available.

KEEP COONAWARRA PHYLLOXERA FREE

South Australia has some of the oldest commercial grapevines in the world. This is because we have never had an outbreak of Phylloxera, an insect that attacks and ultimately kills grapevines. Phylloxera is the number one threat to viticulture in SA as it can be easily carried by humans on footwear, clothing and vehicles.

New South Wales and Victoria have experienced the devastation caused by Phylloxera. If you have been in or near vineyards interstate, please do not walk into vineyards.

DON’T SPREAD PHYLLOXERA

  • Keep to the designated walking trail
  • Do not walk or drive into vineyards further than the trail indicates
  • Have a Phylloxera Foot Bath if necessary

LOOK BOTH WAYS

The Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail operates in and around working vineyards, which can be a hive of activity year-round, seven days a week. Vineyard machinery and service vehicles have right of way, please be aware that they may be present, give way and be alert. As a cool climate wine region the weather can have an impact on the route you choose to take. Please stick to fair weather routes or wear appropriate wet weather foot wear.

WANT TO BUY WINE – NO PROBLEM!

The participating wineries are happy to hold your wine and combine your purchases with any of the other participating wineries to deliver to your accommodation (if local) or freight home for you.
